Over an archway at one of the old Winnipeg schools is written the motto, "Knowledge is Power". That motto has proven true, in many ways. But there is one thing that all man's vaunted knowledge has never given him any power over, and that is his own sinful ways. In spite of our increase in knowledge with regard to the apprehension of criminals and the improvement of burglar alarms and other attempts at crime prevention, crime has not been eliminated. Instead, it is snowballing. In spite of the tremendous increase of knowledge in nearly every field, immorality and anarchy seem to have increased just as fast. Man has no power over himself.
We have slipped up in our great push for knowledge. What we need first is a knowledge of God; and that is exactly what we have neglected. That knowledge alone can give us power over sin. That alone can make us right with God.
How can we acquire that knowledge?
It can be found only in the Lord Jesus Christ. The law of God can give us the knowledge of sin, and the knowledge of our need; but it can't give us the knowledge of sins forgiven. The knowledge of God can come alone through Him who is the very image of God - His own Son. He that knoweth the Son, "knoweth the Father also".
This is the knowledge you need. If you know your sin, then know as well that Christ died for sin; and then you can say with Paul, "I know whom I have believed. and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day". That "Knowledge is Power", indeed.
